Pauline Baynes is best known for her illustrations for the Narnia books. She bases her joyful, flowing and beautifully detailed style on the traditional art of both Persian and Anglo-Saxon manuscripts. Here she uses her skill to illuminate the Nicene Creed with animals, plants and scenes from the Gospels and the Christian life. Although the Nicene Creed is used by many denominations, the imagery here is unequivocally Catholic (click on the thumbnails to see). The translation of the Creed used is pleasingly traditional and dignified.
This is a hardback book and would make a lovely gift. We think it would be especially appropriate for a Baptism or First Communion, but children of all ages, and adults too, will find the illuminations both fascinating and inspiring. It could also be used as an excellent teaching aid for Religious Education and to provide ideas for art projects in the classroom.
